New business
Scaling up from a startup to a demo plant for biobased products from organic waste streams
Situation
The company ChainCraft processes organic waste into fatty acids. These fatty acids can be used in animal feed, but also in lubricants or cleaning products. Through a bioreactor, the company converts organic waste (for example, vegetable and fruit residues) into sustainable products. This way, they reduce food waste and create a valuable product.
A top idea, but it had one challenge: ChainCraft produced only on a laboratory and pilot scale, in litres and cubic metres. To make it a proven technology that could also be profitable, they needed to scale up to a commercial demo plant. ChainCraft did not have the expertise to achieve this in-house. Therefore, they sought a suitable partner in engineering.
Solution
ChainCraft found that partner, literally and figuratively, in KH Engineering. Instead of the traditional choice to define a scope and set a price, KH Engineering proposed an integrated engineering partnership, where experienced engineers from the firm were paired with ChainCraft’s technologists for several months.
KH Engineering thus joined forces with ChainCraft in one team to arrive at the ideal design for the demo plant and went to market for equipment. A unique project approach that was very well received by both companies.
Customer’s benefit
The demo plant of ChainCraft is now located in the Western Harbour Area of Amsterdam, producing on a much larger scale than before partnering with KH Engineering. This way, it becomes a serious market player, already planning to grow tenfold.
Advantage of working with KH Engineering
ChainCraft did not have the in-house capacity to transition from startup to scale-up with a working demo plant. By partnering with KH Engineering, ChainCraft was able to create a solid design for their plant.
They also saved costs by doing part of the engineering themselves, under the guidance of experienced engineers from KH Engineering.
Activities of KH Engineering
KH Engineering performed the following activities for this project:
- Proof of concept
- Basic engineering·
- Equipment selection and sizing
- Designing process diagrams
- Supervising the customer’s engineering team
