Situation

TotalEnergies produces and supplies energy, ranging from oil and biofuels to natural gas, green gas, renewable energy and electricity. Their goal is to make that energy increasingly affordable, cleaner, more reliable and more accessible. This pioneering spirit has always been at the heart of the company.

The Antwerp branch of the multi-energy company brings together three sites (TERA, TEOA and TEPA), forming TotalEnergies’ largest integrated platform in Europe. The focus here is on producing higher value-added products that meet the most stringent environmental standards.

Safety is always the highest priority at TotalEnergies, while also remaining a constant challenge. This applies both to project execution and the final outcome. In today’s context, energy and climate also play a key role. Continuity is equally crucial: when modifying existing installations, it is essential that everything happens within the right timeframe and that downtime is kept to a minimum.

Solution

To remain a pioneer and meet today’s challenges, TotalEnergies’ Antwerp Platform has partnered with KH Engineering from the very beginning. For both large-scale and smaller projects, the multi-energy company relies on KH Engineering — from studies through to execution. KH Engineering offers critical thinking, proposes solutions and thus contributes to the overall efficiency of the projects.

Several projects on which TotalEnergies and KH Engineering have worked — or are currently working — include:

Replacement of petrol-powered loading arms in the Port of Antwerp
The existing petrol loading arms are being replaced with modern versions. These new arms reflect the latest technological developments and comply with current safety and emission reduction regulations.
Reuse of CO₂ emissions from flare systems
Together, we are exploring ways to capture CO₂ from flare installations and reuse it elsewhere within the refinery.
Heating integration programme
Heat exchange between various processes using integrated heat exchangers, with the aim of reducing the number of furnaces — and therefore CO₂ emissions.
Hydrogen import concept study
We are exploring how sustainably produced hydrogen, generated using renewable energy, can be imported and utilised within the refinery’s installations. The study also considers the potential for converting existing furnaces to run on hydrogen recovered from other processes in the plant.
Optimisation of LPG platform safety
The LPG platforms already meet the highest safety standards, but we are continuously investigating whether — and how — improvements can still be made.
